The Siddur Taught by Rabbi Yehiel Poupko.
Learn the organization of the Siddur and the ideas and purposes of each of the sections of Shakharit, Minkha, Ma’ariv and the Shabbat Amidot. With an understanding of the organization and the purpose of each section, comes an appreciation of the artistry of Hazal in the design of the Siddur. Siddur, like Seder, literally translates as the organization. The ideas of the Siddur and the purposes of the T’fillot, become clear through the system of organization. For example, one of the key items for study will be the flow and development of Shacharit Avoda-service as it moves from Birkot Hashakhar to Korbanot, to the P’sukei D’zimra, to Kryiat Shma and its Brakhot and from there to the Amida. The text for the class will of course be the Siddur itself. This class is suitable for those who are well versed in T’filla and for those who are new to it as well. If you plan to participate please contact Rabbi Poupko. |
| Sunday afternoon, July 18 | 4:00 P.M. | Mental health professionals will be present at Or Torah to talk informally with shul members, to offer support and guidance, and to provide referrals for adults or children who are struggling emotionally with the family tragedy of the past week. The professional team are all members of Jewish Federation's JCERT, the Jewish Community Emergency Resilience Team. |
| Sunday evening, July 18 | Following 6:45 P.M. Mincha |
Screening of a film about the Kasztner Controversy
Rezso Kasztner negotiated with Adolf Eichmann, allowing the escape of almost 1700 Hungarian Jews to Switzerland. Yet Kasztner was convicted of being a collaborator in a trial that divided Israel and forever stamped him as the "man who sold his soul to the devil." Most of the verdict was overturned by Israel's Supreme Court, but only after Kasztner was assassinated by Jewish right wing extremists in Tel Aviv in 1957.
The film discusses issues related to the destruction of Hungarian Jewry and is thus appropriate for the Nine Days, but not for young children.
Following the film there will be a discussion with Rabbi Engel followed by Maariv.
All are welcome. |
| Wednesday, July 21 | 8:45 P.M. | Talmud Torat HaRav. "What makes us human? What is the soul?" - Rav Soloveitchik confronts these and many other spiritual issues about who we are as human beings and as Jews, in his book, "The Emergence of Ethical Man." We will discuss chapters four and five of this book. If you would like to participate, please e-mail Rabbi Engel |
| Thursday evening, July 22 | 8:45 P.M. after Ma'ariv | Open Your Rolodexes The Or Torah Networking Group seeks to connect job seekers and members of the shul who are willing to help them in their job search. This meeting will be facilitated by Laurie Rosen, Or Torah member and Executive Career Counselor for the Jewish Vocational Service, David Pelzner and Steve Cohn. We plan to discuss the job search objectives, current search efforts and specific problems being faced individually by each job seeker. The goal is for all participants to share suggestions and offer new ideas. This format has been used successfully in many other networking groups. There will also be time for personal networking, which is so very valuable. You do not need to have a job to offer in order to participate. If you are looking for a job or can do a big mitzvah in helping your fellow neighbor in their job search effort, please attend this important meeting. Please reach out to assist your fellow congregants to broaden their circle of contacts! Please RSVP |
